Scout Oath and Law

At the start of every Pack and Den meeting, scouts stand together and recite the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

Scout Oath

On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

The Scout Oath is a promise each scout makes to themselves. It sets out the big-picture commitments of Scouting: living honorably, helping others, and growing stronger in body, mind, and character.

Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

The twelve points of the Scout Law describe the everyday character traits Scouting is built around. Each word is a specific value scouts are encouraged to practice - not just at meetings, but at home, at school, and everywhere in between.

Why We Repeat Them

Saying the Oath and Law together at every meeting is a Scouting tradition that goes back to the very beginning of the movement. It only takes a few seconds, but it resets everyone’s focus before an activity starts and reminds scouts of the standards they’re holding themselves to. Repeating the words meeting after meeting helps them move from something scouts memorize to something scouts live by.
